Recent Georgia Tech Public Policy (and ISYE) alumnus Nick Wellkamp has been named a Marshall Scholar and will attend the University of Oxford to pursue a master’s degree in economics. Wellkamp was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, plans on pursuing a doctorate as well. “It’s a tremendous honor and a dream come true,” said Wellkamp. “The chance to study at Oxford will be exciting, challenging and intellectually enriching. Nick Wellkamp, who graduated from Georgia Tech in 2009 with a 4.0 GPA and majors in ISYE and Public Policy, has won the Marshall Scholarship. One of only forty students in the US to achieve this honor, Nick intends to use the Marshall to attend Oxford University to study for a master’s and PhD in Economics.

Nick Wellkamp, a December 2009 graduate of the BSPP program, has produced a blog on the website for the Washington-based Center for American Progress, where he has been interning. He analyzes the environmental and economic impact of switching large vehicles such as heavy- and medium-duty trucks and buses to natural gas fuel.
Replacing 3.5 million of these heavy vehicles with natural gas vehicles by 2035 would save more than 1.2 million barrels of oil per day compared to business as usual, which is more than we imported from either …

Congratulations to Kristie Champlin and Nick Wellkamp! These two BSPP seniors were selected as finalists for the 2009 Rhodes Scholarships. Only 200 students nationwide were invited to interview this weekend for this prestigious award, and we’re proud that two BSPP students were among them. (Brandon Kearse, a former ME undergraduate now in Tech’s masters in city planning, and whom we’ve seen in several public policy courses, was Tech’s third Rhodes finalist this year.)

Fellow PUBP major Nick Wellkamp worked at a national Democratic research firm last summer and wanted to let you guys know that they are currently looking for interns for the summer in Atlanta and Washington DC.
We do research and policy work for democratic candidates across the country. In 2008 the firm worked in 24 states, including on one of Politco’s “Top 10 political upsets of 2008” and the Washington Post’s ”honorable mention” winner for “best gubernatorial campaign.”
