A Pittsburgh-based optical device company named II-VI (for the parts of the periodic table including some particular elements) expanded to Singapore in the 1990s to find low-cost and well-educated workers. Since then, through organic growth and acquisitions, it has grown to more than 6,000 workers with operations in 17 countries. It has a production facility in the outskirts of Saigon in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park, which is now home to about 165 companies and 60,000 workers.
