national investments in new technology, managing hazardous and radioactive
wastes, pricing new telecommunications services, using computers
to assist local economic development, and balancing a society's
needs for economic growth with the needs of ecological systems are
just a few examples of the ways that the causes and consequences
of scientific and technological change are becoming increasingly
important to public policymakers. Public policy studies at Georgia Tech therefore have
claim to the specialized knowledge and understanding that are now
essential to the development and evaluation of effective policy
in a technical world.
The School of Public Policy offers B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D.
degrees in Public Policy as well as undergraduate course work in
several social science disciplines whose theories and methods contribute
to the systematic study of public policy problems. The School shares
responsibility for offering undergraduate courses in political science,
philosophy, and other social sciences with the other units of the
Ivan Allan College. Undergraduates
interested in public policy will also find relevant courses offered
by the city planning program
in the College of Architecture.
The School of Public Policy is located in the historic DM Smith building
at the heart of Georgia Tech, just north of downtown Atlanta. Research and studies
at the School of Public Policy focus on policy issues characterized
by their scientific and technological content. This distinguishes
the School from many other policy programs. Both the campus and
the community offer a wealth of cultural and sports events and facilities.
Georgia Tech is among the
top-ranked universities in the United States. As the commercial
and technological hub of the southeastern United States, Atlanta
is home to state, regional and national headquarters for many private
and public organizations, including the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency's regional headquarters and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Atlanta is also the commercial
and technological hub of the southeastern United States.
